ReCycle

Our team won the SIH internal hackathon with ReCycle, an app for recycling old electronics. I later rebuilt the FlutterFlow submission in Flutter, connecting facility search, pickup bookings, the quiz, and rewards. It runs locally without a login.

What you are watching

A look around the app

These are screens from the rebuild. You can search facilities, fill out a pickup, and earn or spend points. Bookings and vouchers are saved on your device as demo records.

  1. HomeYour recorded activity, selected city, and links to the other screens.
  2. Facilities16 places across six cities. Search by name or area, filter by what you are throwing out, sorted nearest first; each one opens for hours, phone and a hand-off to Maps.
  3. PickupAddress, categories, item count, slot — and it states the points awarded before you save.
  4. RewardsEight items from 120 to 1,200 points. What you cannot afford is locked until you have enough points; redeeming issues a voucher code.
  5. ProfileBalance, items diverted from landfill, estimated CO2e savings, every points entry and every voucher claimed.
  6. QuizFive awareness questions, +20 a correct answer, straight onto the ledger.

What is inside an old phone?

Old phones still contain useful metals. Move the slider to explore the estimated amounts in a batch of recycled handsets.

What the app does

01 / features
01

Find a facility

I added 16 facilities across six cities, with search and filters for different electronics. Results are sorted from the selected city centre. Each listing has contact details and a link to Google Maps.

Earn and spend points

The eight sample rewards use points earned from drop-offs, pickups, and the quiz. Claiming one deducts its cost and creates a voucher in the app.

Drop-off +75Pickup +40, +15 an itemQuiz +20120–1,200 to redeem
03

Book a pickup

Choose what you want to recycle, add an address, and pick a time slot. I show the points you will earn before you save the booking.

04

See your activity

The profile keeps your points, past activity, and claimed vouchers in one place. It also estimates the impact of the items you have logged.

05

Keep the points consistent

The balance comes from adding up the transaction history. Earning adds points; redeeming subtracts them. A balance check before each redemption stops you spending more than you have.

The rebuild

02 / from submission to rebuild
v1 — the submission

The hackathon version

  • A FlutterFlow export with the main screens laid out
  • “Find Facility” had no search and no data behind it
  • The redeem page had no balance to spend
  • The user schema had no points field at all
  • Pointed at a Firebase project that no longer resolves, so it could not start
  • Three copies of the quiz page: quiz, quizCopy, quizCopyCopy
v2 — the rebuild

The version I rebuilt

  • Connected screens and a working local data flow
  • Search, filters and distance sorting over a facility directory
  • A points balance calculated from the transaction history
  • Progress saved on the device — no backend or login
  • Firebase auth and Firestore dropped entirely
  • One quiz screen on a question bank, and 12 tests

How I worked

  1. 01Problem

Old electronics end up in landfill because people do not know where to take them.

  2. 02Flow

Find a drop-off point, book a pickup, earn points for what you hand in.

  3. 03Design

Points shown before you save, rewards you cannot afford yet stay locked, places filtered by item.

  4. 04Build

Rebuilt the FlutterFlow hackathon entry in Flutter; it runs locally with no login.

  5. 05Result

Won the SIH internal hackathon; runs on Android, iOS, web and desktop.
